Gift card at any amount
The customer chooses the amount of a gift and who receives it; once the order is paid, Shopify Flow creates a Shopify gift card of that amount for the recipient, and Shopify emails them the code with the message.
How it runs.
It starts in Shopify: no form involved.
- TriggerOrder paid
Shopify issues a gift card product for its variant’s value, whatever the customer paid. So the gift is a normal product with Name your price, and the card is created after the order.
- ConditionCheck if
- A line of the order is the gift product (tag
gift-credit) and has a recipient
Otherwise the workflow stops here.
- A line of the order is the gift product (tag
- Action 1
Read the recipient, the message and the amount paid from the gift line (“Run code”)
- Action 2
Find the recipient by email; if they have no customer account, create one and look again a minute later (“Get customer data”, “Send Admin API request”: customerCreate, “Wait”)
- Action 3
Create a gift card of the amount paid for the recipient, with the message (“Send Admin API request”: giftCardCreate). Shopify emails them the code
- Action 4
If the recipient still cannot be found, email the shop to create the card by hand (“Send internal email”)
What you need, and how to install it.
- Shopify Flow, free in Shopify
- Plan: Server Name your price needs the Server plan. The workflow uses only Flow’s own steps.
- Add-on: Name your price
- Element:
name-your-priceon the gift product, withminandmaxon its Number field - Element: two dynamic properties on the gift product:
Recipient(Email, required) andMessage(Text, up to 200 characters) - A normal product for the gift, not a Shopify gift card product, tagged
gift-credit, with one variant at your lowest amount, no taxes and no shipping
- Install Shopify Flow from the Shopify App Store. It is free in Shopify, but it is a separate app.
- Switch on the Name your price add-on in the Smootify dashboard.
- Place the Smootify element in Webflow:
name-your-priceon the gift product, withminandmaxon its Number field. - Download the .flow file and import it in Shopify Flow.
- Create the gift product: a normal product tagged
gift-credit, one variant at the lowest amount, “Charge tax” off (the tax is charged when the card is spent) and “This is a physical product” off. - Name the dynamic properties exactly
RecipientandMessage: the workflow reads them by name. - In the “Send internal email” step, set your address in place of
staff@example.com. - Turn the workflow on, then test it with an order of an amount that is not the variant’s, to a new email and to an existing customer.
- Test it once with a real submission or order, then turn the flow on.
Where people get stuck.
- 01
One gift per order: if an order has two gift lines, only the first gets a card. Ask for one gift per order, or create the second card by hand.
- 02
The recipient becomes a customer of your shop, with no marketing consent.
- 03
The buyer does not see the code: only the recipient gets it. The buyer finds the gift in their order, with the recipient and the message.
- 04
A cancelled or refunded order does not disable the card: disable it in Products > Gift cards.
- 05
The card is a normal Shopify gift card, so it can be spent everywhere, the invoice of a configured product included. Store credit cannot be spent there.
Get the .flow file.
The file is ready. Download it, import it in Shopify Flow, then follow the install steps above.
