Store credit on a paid order

Shopify Flow gives the customer store credit when they pay an order, takes it back if the order is cancelled, and your site shows the balance.

How it runs.

It starts in Shopify: no form involved.

Workflow 1Give the credit

  1. TriggerOrder paid
  2. ConditionCheck if
    • The order has a customer, and its subtotal is at least 50 in the shop’s currency (change the amount in the Condition step)

    Otherwise the workflow stops here.

  3. Action

Credit 5% of the subtotal to the customer’s store credit, in the currency they paid in, with a “Send Admin API request” action (Flow has no store credit action of its own)

Workflow 2Take it back

  1. TriggerOrder cancelled
  2. ConditionCheck if
    • The order was paid, has a customer, and its subtotal is at least the same amount

    Otherwise the workflow stops here.

  3. Action 1

Debit the same 5% in the same currency

  4. Action 2

If the balance no longer covers it, because the customer already spent the credit, email the shop to decide by hand

What you need, and how to install it.

What you need
  • Shopify Flow, free in Shopify
  • Plan: Every plan The credit lives in Shopify and is spent at checkout. Showing it needs customer accounts.
  • Element: store-credit in the customer account, to show the balance and movements
  • Store credit is native to Shopify: no points app, no extra subscription
How to install
  1. Install Shopify Flow from the Shopify App Store. It is free in Shopify, but it is a separate app.
  2. Place the Smootify element in Webflow: store-credit in the customer account, to show the balance and movements.
  3. Download the .flow file and import it in Shopify Flow.
  4. Set the minimum in the Condition step and the percentage in the API request (times: 0.05 is 5%) before turning it on.
  5. In workflow 2, use the same minimum and the same percentage (0.05 in the Run code step), and set the address that receives the email in place of staff@example.com.
  6. Test it once with a real submission or order, then turn the flow on.

Where people get stuck.

  1. 01

Store credit for an approved review is another route: it needs a trigger on the review changing state, and it is not part of this file.

  2. 02

The customer spends credit at the Shopify checkout. The site only shows it.

  3. 03

Without workflow 2, a cancelled order keeps its credit. A partial refund does not start it: only a cancellation does.

  4. 04

Store credit needs Shopify’s new customer accounts, holds one account per currency, and cannot be spent on draft orders or on subscription renewals.

Get the .flow file.

In Shopify Flow, choose Import and pick the file. The workflow opens turned off: check that it reads your metaobject definition and its field keys, then turn it on.
