Why a build-your-own box cannot be a subscription.
It is the question we get most. Shopify’s Cart Transform refuses to merge lines when any of them carries a selling plan, and merging is how a custom box becomes one line with its own title and image. So the two exclude each other, on every plan.
A breakfast box of 6: the customer picks coffee, granola and jam, and the box reaches checkout as one line with its own title and image.

Free for the box
The pattern that works: the build-your-own box as a one-off purchase, curated boxes as simple products with a selling plan. There is a workaround, the empty box, but every product inside must cost the same.
