How do discounts work in Shopify?

A price reduction set in Shopify, either a code the customer types or an automatic discount that applies itself; it can take an amount or a percentage off products or the order, give free shipping, or offer buy X get Y.

Shopify discounts live in Discounts, in the admin, and come in two forms:

  • Discount codes: the customer types a code, such as WELCOME10, in the cart or at checkout;
  • Automatic discounts: they apply on their own when the cart meets the conditions, such as “10% off orders over $100”.

Each discount has a kind:

  • an amount or a percentage off products;
  • an amount or a percentage off the order;
  • buy X, get Y;
  • free shipping.

Rules decide who can use it, when, how many times, and whether it combines with other discounts. Apps can add more kinds.

A discount is not a compare-at price: the compare-at price only changes what the product page shows, the discount changes what the cart charges.

In Webflow terms

Webflow Ecommerce discounts are codes only. Shopify’s are richer, and Smootify shows them inside your cart design.

In Smootify

cart="discount"

On the whole order

Lists
Each code that applies, and each automatic discount on the order.
Inside
discount="title", discount="amount", a remove button.
Remove
Codes only: an automatic discount loses its button.
cart-item="discount"

On one line

Lists
Each discount that lowers the price of that product.
Inside
cart-item, with discount="title" and discount="amount".
Totals
Already off cart="subtotal": it never shows in the order's list.

A coupon field in the cart applies a code, and a link with ?discount= and a code applies it on arrival.
