How does Shopify handle taxes, and why do my prices include them or not?

Shopify works out the taxes of every order from the store's settings, and each market decides whether the prices shown include tax, as in Europe, or add it at checkout, as in the United States.

Taxes are set in Shopify, under Settings › Taxes and duties. Shopify works out the tax of every order from where the customer is and what they buy.

The question designers meet first is whether the prices on the page include tax:

  • in Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia, prices are usually shown with tax included: €49 is what the customer pays;
  • in the United States and Canada, prices are usually shown without tax: the tax is added at checkout, once the address is known.

Each market has its own choice, so a store can show tax-inclusive prices to Europe and tax-exclusive prices to the United States. Duties and import taxes, for international orders, are set in the same place.

In Webflow terms

Webflow Ecommerce had its own tax settings. In a Smootify store, Webflow plays no part in taxes: Shopify decides them and the checkout charges them.

In Smootify

Smootify shows prices as Shopify sends them for the visitor’s market: the same amounts the checkout charges. Whether they include tax is the Shopify setting of that market, not something you set on the site.
