The URL name of a product or a collection, such as linen-shirt in /products/linen-shirt: lowercase, unique, made from the title when the item is created, and on a Smootify site the same as the Webflow slug.
Every product, collection and page in Shopify has a handle: its name in the address. “Linen Shirt” gets the handle linen-shirt, and its page is /products/linen-shirt.
Three things about handles catch people out:
- It is made once. Shopify writes the handle from the title when the product is created. Renaming the product later does not change it: you change it yourself, under Search engine listing on the product page.
- It is unique. Two products cannot share a handle, so a copy becomes
linen-shirt-1. - Changing it moves the page. The old address stops working, unless Shopify creates a redirect, which it offers when you edit the handle.
In Webflow terms
The handle is the Shopify twin of the Webflow slug. On a Smootify site they are the same: the CMS sync writes the handle into the slug, and Smootify’s links use it. So do not edit slugs in Webflow: change the handle in Shopify, then sync.
In Smootify
Smootify builds its links as /products/<handle>, /collections/<handle> and /vendors/<vendor>, like Shopify. If your template pages use other URLs, such as /product/, set productsBase, collectionsBase and vendorsBase in the options, or the links in the cart and in search results open a 404 page.
