Two free text fields of every product: the vendor is the brand or maker, the product type is your own kind of product, such as Shirt; both are used to filter, to group products and to build automated collections.
Every Shopify product has two simple classification fields:
- the vendor: the brand or the maker, such as “Linea Studio”. A store that sells its own products often puts its own name;
- the product type: your own word for the kind of product, such as “Shirt” or “Coffee”.
Both are free text, picked from a list of the values you have used before. They are not the same as the category, which comes from Shopify’s standard list and adds category fields.
What they are for:
- automated collections, such as “vendor is Linea Studio”;
- filters on the collection and search pages;
- reports and the admin’s own filters.
In Webflow terms
Shopify has no page for a vendor. With Smootify, your site has a CMS collection named Vendors, one item per vendor, so each brand can have its own page at /vendors/<vendor>, with its products loaded from Shopify.
In Smootify
product="vendor" shows a product’s vendor, and product="type" its type. On a vendor page, smootify-search-discovery with data-vendor lists that vendor’s products, with filters and sorting.
