Free labels you put on products, customers and orders, such as vip or linen, that customers do not see unless you show them: Shopify uses them for automated collections, filters, segments and Flow.
A tag is a word you attach to something in Shopify: linen on a product, vip on a customer, gift on an order. Tags are free: you invent them as you go, and a product can have many.
They do a lot of quiet work:
- automated collections: “tag is linen”;
- filters: Shopify’s Search & Discovery app can filter by tag;
- customer segments: all customers tagged
vip, for an email or a discount; - automations: Shopify Flow can add and remove tags, and start workflows when they change.
Customers never see tags unless the storefront shows them.
In Webflow terms
Tags work like a Webflow multi-reference or an option field used only for filtering, but they live in Shopify and need no CMS field.
