How do customer accounts work in Shopify?

Customers log in with a one-time code Shopify emails them, with no password, through Shopify's new customer accounts; the classic accounts with passwords are deprecated.

A customer account lets a shopper log in to see their orders, save their addresses, manage subscriptions and spend store credit. Shopify has two systems:

  • New customer accounts: no password. The customer types their email and Shopify sends a one-time code. This is the current system, and the one store credit, B2B and many apps need.
  • Classic customer accounts: email and password. Shopify has deprecated them and will remove them.

You choose the system under Settings › Customer accounts. Customers are created at the first login or the first order, and every customer has a record in the admin with their orders, tags and notes.

In Webflow terms

Webflow’s own user accounts have nothing to do with Shopify’s. In a Smootify store the accounts are Shopify’s, and the account pages are Webflow pages you design: the data comes from Shopify after the customer logs in.

In Smootify

Login uses the new customer accounts, through the Headless storefront and the key newCustomerAccountsPublicKey. The account pages show the customer’s details, orders, addresses, subscriptions and store credit, and elements can show only to logged-in customers, or to customers with a tag.
