Product questions and answers

A question asked on a product page reaches you by email and joins the product’s list; once you answer it and make it active, Shopify Flow tells the customer who asked.

How it runs.

A Webflow form writes a metaobject; Shopify Flow takes it from there.

Workflow 1When a question arrives

  1. TriggerMetaobject entry created
  2. Action 1

Email the shop with the question and a link to the entry in the admin (“Send internal email”)

  3. Action 2

Add the question to the product’s custom.questions list (“Run code” and “Send Admin API request”)

Workflow 2Every day

  1. TriggerScheduled time

Once a day: Flow has no trigger for an entry becoming active, so it finds the answered questions not yet notified.

  2. ConditionCheck if
    • The question is active, has an answer, a customer and a product, and was not notified yet

    Otherwise the workflow stops here.

  3. Action 1

Email the customer who asked, with the answer and a button to the product page (the file sends it with a “Send HTTP request” to Resend)

  4. Action 2

    Mark the question as notified

How to install
  1. Install Shopify Flow from the Shopify App Store. It is free in Shopify, but it is a separate app.
  2. In Shopify, create the metaobject definition question with the fields below. Turn on Active-draft status and Storefront access.
  3. Switch on the Metaobject creator add-on in the Smootify dashboard.
  4. Place the Smootify element in Webflow: metaobject-creator with data-type="question" and data-draft="true" on the product page, and smootify-metaobjects with data-type="metafield.custom.questions" to list them.
  5. Download the .flow file and import it in Shopify Flow.
  6. In workflow 1, set the email address that receives the questions in place of faqs@gmail.com, and your store handle in the admin link instead of YOUR_STORE_HANDLE.
  7. In workflow 2, pick your Question definition again in “Get metaobject entries”: the file names the definition of the store it was made on.
  8. Test it once with a real submission or order, then turn the flow on.

Where people get stuck.

  1. 01

Only shoppers linked to a customer are told: give the form customer-field="customer". Never add an email field to the Question definition: with Storefront access, every field of an active entry can be read publicly.

  2. 02

A question shows on the product only once you make it active.

  3. 03

Workflow 2 runs once a day, so the customer hears back the day after you answer.

Get the .flow file.

In Shopify Flow, choose Import and pick the file. The workflow opens turned off: check that it reads your metaobject definition and its field keys, then turn it on.

Workflow 2 sends the email through Resend with a “Send HTTP request”. In that step, replace RESEND_API_KEY with your Resend API key, set a sender on a domain you verified in Resend instead of noreply@example.com, and point the button to your Webflow site instead of www.example.com.

Shopify plan. This file sends its email with Flow’s “Send HTTP request”, which runs only on the Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. On Basic, replace that step with the action of an app that sends transactional emails from Shopify Flow, such as Workflow Email: the rest of the workflow stays as it is.
